The Norwegian Krone (plural kroner) is the official currency of Norway and is identified by the Norwegian Krone symbol kr or currency code NOK. As with Danish currency, the name krone literally translates to English word crown. The Krone is subdivided into 100 Øre,similar to how dollar currencies are divided into 100 cents.
In 1873, Sweden and Denmark formed the Scandinavian Monetary union to merge their currencies to the gold standard. Norway joined the union two years later in 1875 and the central banks in each country acted as a single reserve bank for the krone. This allowed the three Scandinavian currencies to have equal value when traded with another. However, WW1 forced the disbanding of the gold standard system, but the countries decided to keep the krone as their primary currencies even if it was not interchangeable between the other kroner.
