The official currency of New Caledonia is the CFP franc - abbreviated to XPF. The currency is referred to as ‘franc’ in everyday use and is used in the French overseas collectives of French Polynesia, New Caledonia and Wallis and Futuna.
CFP stands for ‘Change Franc Pacifique’ (Pacific Franc Exchange) and was introduced in 1945 along with the CFA franc used in certain parts of Africa. The Institut d’émission d’Outre-Mer (IEOM) is responsible for issuing the CFP franc.
The most commonly-used bills are the 500, 1000, 5000 and 10000 notes; while coins are used for denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 francs.
